Jesca Hoop

„Outside Of Eden“ heißt eine Single aus Jesca Hoops neuem Album „Stonechild“, die es mir sofort angetan hat. Ein zart berührendes Folkstück, auf dem sie mit ihrer Kollegin This Is The Kit und ihrem 12jährigen Neffen Justis zu hören ist: „I see it as a feminist anthem; we big sisters encouraging our shut-in boys to love the very real, the very living, and breathing girl. (…) Kids and tech are at the centre of this one. The fact that kids can and are accessing such potent material without guidance really bothers me. (…) I feel for what they are missing out on compared to the wild outdoor life I lived as a child.“ Dabei hat sich die kalifornische Künstlerin dem Produzenten John Parish (PJ Harvey, Aldous Harding, This is the Kit) anvertraut und – unterstützt von der Indieband Lucius – in Bristol ihre Platte eingespielt. Die Zusammenarbeit mit Parish beschreibt sie als eher schmerzlich: “I’ve never been so brutally edited (…) He said, you will forgive me, and in some way I think I actually enjoyed that treatment… being stripped back to the bare basics… albeit painfully”. Die Kollaboration hat ihrer Musik gut getan, herausgekommen sind 11 zum Dahinschmelzen schöne Folksongs, in denen sie Rassismus, „hate crimes“ (“Red White and Black”) und kulturelle Stigmatisierung anprangert („Shoulder Change“). Ihre behutsamen Gitarrenmelodien sind schon eine Klasse für sich, zusammen mit ihrer tollen, warmen Stimme, märchenhaften Chören und fantasievoll agierenden Bandkollegen ergeben sie ein grandioses Gesamtkunstwerk.
