Meschiya Lake & The New Movement

“Jazz is a spectrum – you go from Ellington to really silly tunes and I think we captured a bit of that on the record, the full spectrum of Jazz”, sagt Meschiya Lake über ihr neues, selbst produziertes Album. Sie hat eine bewegte Vergangenheit, begann als Neunjährige öffentlich zu singen, lebte als Zirkusnomadin und Straßenmusikerin, gründete ihre eigene Band (Little Big Horns Jazz Band) und wurde mehrmals als beste Sängerin ausgezeichnet. Für ihre neue CD hat sie sich 2019 in Berlin ein internationales Jazzensemble zusammengestellt: „The New Movement“. Die neue Bewegung ist mehr als eine Band, sie soll ein safe space für alle, vor allem für LGBTQ, PoC und Frauen sein (gleichwohl besteht die Band aus Männern). Auch den Originalsongs, die sie neu interpretiert, begegnet sie mit Respekt. „We need to recognize, and honor, that this music, and dance, were made by black people”, schreibt sie in den Liner Notes. “… the people that made the music you are dancing to had to go in the back door of the venue, they weren’t allowed to go in the front. It’s important to know history so that you can stop generational trauma, heal from it and not do it again”. Die Songs von Duke Ellington, Memphis Minnie u.a. ergänzt sie mit eigenen, die sie mit ihrem Coproducer François Perdriau geschrieben hat. Das Ganze klingt herrlich old school und manchmal ein bisschen schräg. Meschiya Lake versetzt ihr Publikum mühelos in einen Nachtclub der 30er Jahre.
